An IP address commonly maps to the wrong city because IP geolocation estimates a network location, not a device's precise physical position. Different databases can assign the same address to different nearby cities, a network hub, or an ISP registration location.
A city-level IP result is an approximation. It should not be interpreted as a home address or live GPS position.
How IP Geolocation Works
Geolocation companies combine internet registry records, network routing observations, ISP-supplied corrections, measurements, and other signals. IP addresses are reassigned and networks change faster than every database updates, so results differ.
View the current estimate on the IP map, then compare it with an IP lookup. A disagreement between services is normal and illustrates the uncertainty.
Common Reasons the City Is Wrong
- The database uses the ISP's regional gateway, office, or registration location
- The ISP recently moved or reassigned an address block
- Mobile traffic exits through a carrier gateway far from the device
- A rural or suburban connection is mapped to the nearest recognized city
- Carrier-grade NAT lets many subscribers share an internet-facing address
- The database has stale or conflicting records
A VPN, Proxy, or Privacy Relay Is Active
When traffic exits through an intermediary, sites use that exit address for IP geolocation. The displayed place should broadly correspond to the exit network, not your device. Even then, a selected server city may appear as a nearby city in a database.

Your Browser or App Uses Another Location Source
A map, weather app, or search engine may use more than IP geolocation. With permission, a device can use GPS, nearby Wi-Fi networks, cellular positioning, or a previously saved account location. That can produce a more precise result—or a different stale result—than an IP lookup.
IPv4 and IPv6 Can Produce Different Results
IPv4 and IPv6 addresses belong to different allocations and can have different geolocation records. A site may prefer one address family while another lookup uses the other, so compare the exact address each service evaluated.
Can You Correct the Location?
- Confirm the exact public address and whether a VPN, proxy, or relay is active
- Check more than one reputable database to determine whether the error is widespread
- If the ISP owns the address, ask whether it publishes geolocation corrections for that block
- Use the correction process provided by the database showing the error
- For an app using device location, review its permission and saved-location settings instead
Restarting a router may obtain another dynamic address on some networks, but it is not a reliable correction method and can simply produce another address with the same database record.
When the Difference Matters
A nearby-city mismatch is usually harmless. A wrong country can affect language, content licensing, fraud checks, or account security. Record the exact IP and result, rule out an intermediary, and report persistent country-level errors to the relevant database or service.
