Yes—for traffic that goes through the tunnel, a VPN normally changes the public IP address seen by websites and internet services. They see the VPN server's address instead of the public address assigned to your home, office, or mobile connection.
A VPN changes the visible source IP for routed traffic. It does not remove IP addressing, change every local address on your device, or automatically hide other identifiers.
Which IP Address Changes?
Most devices have several addresses. The distinction matters when checking a VPN:
- Public IP: the internet-facing address websites can observe; this is the address a VPN normally replaces
- Private or local IP: an address such as 192.168.x.x used inside a home or office network; this often remains unchanged
- VPN tunnel IP: an internal address assigned to the encrypted tunnel interface
- IPv4 and IPv6: separate public address families that must be evaluated independently
What a Website Sees Before and After
Without a VPN, a site normally sees the public address used by your ISP or network gateway. With the VPN connected, the packet exits from a VPN server, so the site normally sees that server's public address. Many users can share the same exit address.

Why Your Original IP Might Still Appear
- The VPN session did not finish connecting or has silently disconnected
- Split tunneling excludes the browser or app being tested
- A browser-level proxy or privacy relay takes a different route
- The VPN handles IPv4 but the connection still uses the original public IPv6, or vice versa

Does a VPN Permanently Change Your IP?
No. The VPN server address is used while relevant traffic is routed through that server. Disconnecting normally returns traffic to the network's current public IP. Reconnecting may select the same exit address or another address from the provider's pool.
Does the VPN Change Your Location?
It changes the network location inferred from the VPN server's IP. It does not change GPS, nearby Wi-Fi data, device-region settings, billing information, or a location stored in an account. Sites can use those other signals when permission and configuration allow.
IP location is also approximate. A server selected in one city can be labeled as a nearby city or a network registration office in a geolocation database.

- Compare the network owner, not only the city label
