Why is My IP Blacklisted? How to Fix It

Learn why your IP address might be on a blacklist and step-by-step instructions to get delisted.

Published March 1, 2024

If your IP is blacklisted, you might experience email delivery problems, blocked website access, or CAPTCHA challenges. Here's why it happens and how to fix it.

Common Reasons for Blacklisting

  • Previous owner of the IP sent spam
  • A device on your network is infected with malware
  • Your email server is misconfigured (open relay)
  • You're on a shared IP with bad actors (hosting, VPN)
  • Your ISP assigned you a previously flagged IP

Step 1: Identify the Problem

Use our Blacklist Check tool to see which blacklists you're on. Each blacklist has different criteria and delisting procedures.

Step 2: Fix the Root Cause

  • Run antivirus/malware scans on all devices
  • Check for open relays on mail servers
  • Secure any compromised accounts
  • Update all software and firmware

Step 3: Request Delisting

Visit each blacklist's website and follow their delisting procedure. Most have self-service removal forms. Some auto-delist after 24-48 hours if no new abuse is detected.

Don't request delisting until you've fixed the underlying problem. Repeated listings can result in permanent blocks.
